Ingredients

Units Scale

For the Pretzel Dogs

  • 15 sausage franks or hot dogs
  • 1 tube (13.8 ounces) pizza dough
  • 5 cups water
  • 1/4 cup (55 g) baking soda
  • 1 large egg, room temperature, beaten
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Set your oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ensure easy cleanup.
  2. Prepare the dough: Remove the pizza dough from its packaging and place it on a floured cutting board. Using a rolling pin, roll out the dough into a rectangle about ¼-inch thick. Then, use a pizza cutter to slice the dough into 15 even strips.
  3. Wrap the sausages: Take each dough strip and roll it into a rope shape, then tightly wrap it around each sausage, covering it completely. Pinch the ends of the dough together to seal and keep it from unraveling during boiling and baking.
  4. Boil the dough-wrapped sausages: In a large saucepan over medium heat, bring 5 cups of water to a light boil. Add the baking soda and stir to dissolve. Working in batches of 3-4, gently drop the wrapped sausages into the boiling water and boil them for 20-30 seconds. Use a slotted spoon to remove them carefully and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
  5. Apply egg wash and salt: Brush the outside of each pretzel dog evenly with the beaten egg using a pastry brush. Sprinkle each with kosher salt to add that classic pretzel flavor and a slight crunch.
  6. Bake: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 20-21 minutes or until the dough is a beautiful golden brown color and cooked through.
  7. Serve: Remove from oven and let cool slightly before serving. Enjoy these pretzel dogs warm as a snack or meal!

Notes

  • Ensure the water is at a gentle boil before adding the pretzel-wrapped sausages to help the dough set properly.
  • If pizza dough is not available, homemade pretzel dough can be substituted for an even more authentic taste.
  • For an extra touch, serve with mustard, cheese sauce, or your favorite dipping sauces.
  • Make sure the egg is at room temperature to achieve a smooth, even egg wash on the dough for a shiny finish.
  • Be careful when boiling and removing the pretzel dogs to avoid breaking the dough wrap.
