This festive Ghostly Pizza is a fun and spooky twist on a classic homemade pizza, perfect for Halloween celebrations. The crust is baked until golden and puffy, topped with tomato sauce, and decorated with ghost-shaped provolone or mozzarella cheese and olive ‘eyes’ and ‘legs’ for a playful haunted effect.

Ingredients

Units Scale

For the Dough and Base

  • 1 lb pizza dough, left at room temperature for 1 hour
  • Olive oil, for pan brushing
  • 1/2 cup pizza or marinara sauce

For Toppings

  • 8 to 10 deli slices of provolone or mozzarella cheese
  • Large pitted olives

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven and Prepare Baking Sheet: Place a rack in the bottom third of the oven and preheat to 425°F. Lightly brush a large baking sheet with olive oil to prevent sticking.
  2. Shape the Dough: On a lightly floured surface, shape the pizza dough into a large oval. Transfer the dough onto the prepared baking sheet.
  3. Add Sauce and Bake Crust: Spread the pizza sauce evenly over the dough, leaving a ½-inch border around the edges. Bake the dough for about 15 minutes, or until the crust is puffed and golden brown around the edges.
  4. Prepare Olive and Cheese Decorations: While the crust bakes, cut the large pitted olives in half. Slice one half of each olive into 8 thin slices. Cut the cheese slices into ghost shapes and use small pieces of olives to create ‘eyes’ for the ghosts.
  5. Decorate Pizza: Remove the pizza from the oven. Arrange the cheese ghost shapes on top of the baked crust. Place the uncut olive halves between the ghosts and use the sliced olives to form 8 legs on each ‘spider’ around the ghosts.
  6. Melt Cheese Toppings: Return the pizza to the oven and bake for an additional 30 to 60 seconds, just until the cheese ghosts start to melt slightly.

Notes

  • Letting the pizza dough rest at room temperature for an hour improves its elasticity and makes it easier to shape.
  • Using deli slices of provolone or mozzarella works best for easily cutting ghost shapes.
  • Be careful not to overbake after adding the cheese decorations; the goal is to soften the cheese while preserving the ghost shapes.
  • Olive slices create fun decorative details that add flavor and a spooky effect.
  • You can use a pizza stone if preferred, but a baking sheet works well and is easier to handle for assembling the ghosts.
