Ingredients

Units Scale

Butterfly Pea Tequila

  • 8 ounces tequila blanco
  • 1/4 cup dried butterfly pea flowers

Garnish (optional)

  • 1 slice lime
  • Fine grain salt (use Himalayan pink salt for a little more color)
  • 1/4 teaspoon edible glitter

Cocktail

  • 1 ounce lime juice
  • 1/2 ounce simple syrup (or agave nectar)
  • 1/2 ounce Cointreau (or triple sec)
  • 1 1/2 ounces butterfly pea-infused tequila

Instructions

  1. Infuse Tequila: Mix the tequila blanco and dried butterfly pea flowers in a sealed jar. Let the mixture sit for about 20 minutes until the tequila reaches a vibrant blue-purple color, shaking occasionally to enhance infusion.
  2. Strain and Bottle: Strain out the butterfly pea flowers using a fine strainer and pour the infused tequila into a resealable glass container for use in your cocktail.
  3. Prepare Glass Rim: Moisten half of the rim of a cocktail glass with water or a cut lime. Dip the wet part into fine grain salt (preferably Himalayan pink salt) so it sticks evenly to the rim.
  4. Garnish Prep: Cut a small slit in the side of a lime slice so it can easily sit on the edge of the glass.
  5. Crush Ice (Optional): If you prefer crushed ice, place ice cubes in a Lewis bag and crush them gently with a mallet. Set aside the crushed ice, still contained in the bag.
  6. Mix Cocktail Ingredients: Combine lime juice, simple syrup (or agave nectar), and Cointreau (or triple sec) in a cocktail shaker.
  7. Shake Cocktail: Fill the shaker with ice and shake vigorously for about 15-20 shakes to chill and blend the ingredients well.
  8. Prepare Glass: Fill your cocktail glass with crushed ice (or regular ice if crushed is unavailable).
  9. Strain and Layer: Strain the shaken cocktail mix into the glass over the ice. Pour the butterfly pea-infused tequila slowly on top to create a dark purple layer over the pink base.
  10. Add Edible Glitter: Optionally sprinkle ¼ teaspoon of edible glitter into the drink for a sparkling galaxy effect.
  11. Create Color Gradient: Gently stir the top half of the cocktail to achieve a gradient effect from pink to deep purple. Alternatively, stir the whole drink to blend it into a uniform dark pink color.
  12. Garnish and Serve: Place the slit lime slice on the glass rim as garnish and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Using Himalayan pink salt enhances the visual appeal by adding a slight color contrast to the glass rim.
  • Dried butterfly pea flowers can be found at specialty tea shops or online.
  • Adjust sweetness by varying simple syrup or agave nectar quantity to suit taste.
  • Fresh lime juice is recommended for the best flavor.
  • Edible glitter is completely optional but adds a whimsical, cosmic sparkle to the cocktail.
  • This cocktail is best served immediately to enjoy the layered colors before they blend.
